Description and Functions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Wildlife Management Coordinator in Sheridan, WY. This position supervises and directs permanent and temporary employees' work activities, planning, and conducting studies on the population dynamics of free-roaming wildlife populations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Writes and implements work plans to achieve implementation of Sheridan Region terrestrial wildlife goal(s).
  • Responsible for reviewing, monitoring, and controlling expenditures from the budget(s); assists in the development of budget recommendations.
  • Makes recommendations for policies and procedures and implements policies; researches/resolves difficult questions/complaints requiring technical knowledge.
  • Recommend hiring, firing, and disciplinary decisions; conducts performance appraisals; trains subordinates and public entities; writes detailed evaluation reports and makes recommendations; responsible for all functions in the work unit.
  • Writes detailed technical, investigative, and scientific reports.
  • Identifies research needs and performs advanced scientific research.
  • Develops long-range plans and strategies that relate to environmental impact.
  • Responsible for coordination and participation in annual wildlife population and field harvest data collection, analysis, management recommendations, and annual reporting on game and/or non-game species.
  • Oversees the management of an occupational group responsible for one or more of the following: all wildlife and terrestrial habitat resources in the Sheridan Region.
  • Develops a fiscal year work plan and schedules with other department supervisors to coordinate projects on a regional or statewide level.
  • Responsible for dealing with and solving issues brought forward by the public about wildlife or terrestrial habitat management practices.
  • Devises and coordinates wildlife regulation development for multiple species based on scientific information and public input, plans, schedules, conducts, and supervises local wildlife research projects.
  • Provide wildlife and terrestrial habitat management leadership for the Sheridan Region.
  • Coordinates wildlife captures, including capture methods/facilities and chemical immobilization.
  • Coordinate with other agencies, department personnel, programs, and/or outside entities; conducts public participation efforts.
  • Supervision of employees is often conducted remotely to complete projects and activities.
  • Solicits project proposals to benefit regional goals; writes grants for research and management of wildlife.
  • Responsible for the work unit to follow all established policies, regulations, statutes, and procedures.
  • Responsible for the development, review, and editing of procedures manuals.
  • Reviews biological data, inspects and evaluates site location, and reviews development plans for projects to determine if the projects are viable and feasible.
  • Solicits bids, submit purchase requisitions, makes purchases, and submits invoices for payment. Follows all fiscal procedures and accurately completes all necessary forms.
Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference will be given to those with BS in Wildlife Management/biology, PLUS 4-6 years of progressive work experience in Wildlife Management or a MS in Wildlife Management/biology, PLUS 2-3 years of progressive work experience in Wildlife Management.

**Must have a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, ability to convey complex wildlife management principles to a variety of publics.
  • Knowledge of principles, concepts, and practices of wildlife management at an advanced level.
  • Knowledge of processes of State government, including legislative and administrative processes and the guiding principles and concepts underlying these processes.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures established for the work system, acquired by advanced on the job experience.
  • Knowledge of natural resource management, range management, wetland management, and habitat management.
  • Intermediate knowledge of principles, concepts, and cues of government mana practice segment, including budget development and control, personnel and purchasing management, administrative prerogatives, and responsibilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of the NEPA process, impacts analysis, environmental comment development, and available mitigation techniques.
  • Ability to coordinate and work with federal, state, and local agencies on complex wildlife management issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Wildlife Management)

PLUS

Experience:
1-3 years progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management)

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:
4-7 years of progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
CDL may be required
Necessary Special Requirements

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check before appointment.
  • CDL is NOT required for this position.
  • Travel will be required.
