Position Overview

Under immediate supervision, for a period of three (3) to eighteen (18) months, participates in a trainee program designed to prepare trainees to work effectively with students with visually impaired and/or multiple disabilities attending Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI). Successfully completes assignments in the care and training of ISVI students under close supervision. Participates in job orientation which introduces and acquaints the trainee with the philosophy, policies, objectives, and programs of the Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) and ISVI, the total educational and social programs and the residential units, the personnel system and conditions of employment, the kind and nature of supportive services to students, and the physical layout of campus. Assists in and travels with students to ensure the safe transit of students to and from school, home, classes, and activities on and off campus. Attends staff meetings where student’s progress is evaluated.

Essential Functions

Participates in job orientation which introduces and acquaints the trainee with the philosophy, policies, objectives, and programs of the Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) and ISVI, the total educational and social programs and the residential units, the personnel system and conditions of employment, the kind and nature of supportive services to students, and the physical layout of campus.
Assists in and travels with students to ensure the safe transit of students to and from school, home, classes, and activities on and off campus.
Attends staff meetings where student’s progress is evaluated.
Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires knowledges, skills, and mental development equivalent to an A.A. (associate’s) degree in childcare, sociology, or human services, OR requires two (2) years of experience in the care and supervision of children as could be gained in a day care facility or a Head Start Program.

Conditions of Employment

Requires ability to travel.
Upon employment, employee will be subject to Tuberculin (TB) Test.
Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
