Scientific Engineering Associate

AVS

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( ) EcoSENSE lab of the Climate & Ecosystems Division ( ) has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be responsible for conducting laboratory and field experiments, carrying out analysis of rock, soil and fluid samples, and playing a key role in organizing the laboratory. You will carry out data processing and analytical tasks. You will work with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists to develop new sensing and characterization approaches related to ecosystem dynamics and subsurface environmental and energy-related processes.

What You Will Do:

Assist in the design, setup, and conduct of laboratory and field experiments related to fundamental hydrological, mechanical, and biogeochemical processes in soils, sediments, and rocks.

Setup and conduct laboratory analysis of geomaterial samples.

Conduct data processes, analytics, and communicate results to the research group.

Develop and conduct numerical methods to improved understanding of hydrobiogeochemical processes, such as evapotranspiration and water content dynamics.

Provide assistance in sensor development, testing, and calibration. These could be prototype, one-of-a-kind, or replicated measurement systems.

Write data processing and visualization codes using R, Matlab, Python, Jupyter notebook, or C++

Design and carry out QA/QC protocols.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

Participate in co-authoring scientific articles and writing proposals.

Supervise students and technical assistants.

Manage task and project budgets.

What is Required:

Bachelor's or Master's degree (or equivalent work experience) in environmental engineering/science, geology, hydrology, ecology, or equivalent discipline.

Record of working effectively both independently and in an integrated team.

Demonstrated experiences in designing and building field and lab experiments and sensing systems.

Demonstrated experiences and expertise in collecting and conducting sample analysis.

Expertise in data processing, analytics, and the utilization of numerical methods for process modeling and understanding.

Ability to collaborate with and communicate findings to members of the research team and beyond.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Statistics and data analysis tools.

Conducted or published research in environmental, hydrology, ecology, biogeochemistry, or related field.

Prior research in environmental, hydrological, and biogeochemical science, or related field.

Experience in experimental design and fabrication.

Desired Qualifications:

Familiarity and experience with geophysical data acquisition methods.

Familiarity and experience with geochemical analytical tools.
