Now Hiring Realtime Captioners

At VITAC, we currently produce more than 300,000 hours of realtime captions per year – that’s about 6,000 hours per week. We expanded our captioning hours significantly over the last several years and have experienced continued growth. We caption very diverse programming for a variety of clients – mostly high-profile clients with nationally viewable programming. Therefore, we offer you the opportunity to caption programming that you’re actually able to see. Some examples would be CBS, NBC, CNN, HLN, MSNBC, CNBC, and QVC. You can reach the world with your unique skills without ever leaving your home!

If you have realtime steno skills and are able to write at least 225 WPM, consider a career in broadcast captioning, even pursued training or attended a workshop, but are unsure about how to make the transition, VITAC may be the right choice.

Paid Training: All employees travel to VITAC’s headquarters for one week of paid technical instruction at the beginning of a salaried training period. Upon completion, the captioner is paid a competitive hourly on-air rate.

Technical Support: VITAC hires captioners to work in an employee status. Doing so allows us to train our captioners on the technical aspects before they go on air, and captioners continue to receive support throughout their employment.

VITAC remote captioner employees are provided with all of their equipment, hardware, software, technical support, phone line installation, and direct billing of phone line charges. Employees provide their own steno machine, television, headsets, and pay for their own high-speed internet service.

Guaranteed Payment and Benefits: VITAC captioner employees are paid semi-monthly via direct deposit and are also offered a benefit package that includes health insurance with shared employer/employee premiums, company-paid short- and long-term disability, and a 401(k) plan with a percentage of match on the employee’s investment.

Varied Schedules: It may be obvious, but it still warrants mentioning – broadcast captioners work the hours of the broadcast industry. VITAC is a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year business. If you’re watching something on television, likely someone somewhere is captioning at that time. That might sound overwhelming, but it can result in some interesting scheduling options.

A Great Work Environment: VITAC cultivates outstanding team relationships among employees. Our captioners are supported by the largest production coordination team in the industry, with engineering and I.T. staff devoted solely to remote captioners and a management team devoted to making each employee feel at home at VITAC, no matter how far away they may be from our facility.
