About the opportunity:
SWCA Environmental Consultants seeks a highly experienced, self-motivated project manager to successfully drive our mining projects from early planning and permitting through development, operation, and closure. Qualified candidates must have experience in mining, energy, and infrastructure markets throughout the Western United States. The person we select to fill this role will report to SWCA’s Sheridan's Office with the option of working as a distributed employee.

What you will accomplish:

  • NEPA, land use planning, siting, and constraints studies in support of mining projects
  • Managing large and complex projects and milestones within schedule and budget expectations, including the quality assurance/quality control of data in support of report writing, permitting, and planning studies
  • Report writing
  • Managing multiple multidisciplinary staff to create an effective team with a clear vision of goals and objectives and how to meet them
  • Adhering to SWCA’s professional and safety standards
  • Field tasks involving site assessments, inspections, construction or project oversight, collecting high-precision GPS data, overseeing field crews
  • Occasional travel to site locations throughout the Rocky mountain region
  • Ensuring compliance with existing permit conditions, including overseeing records maintenance, inspections, and associated reporting and recommended corrective actions
  • Supervising staff
  • Maintaining solid working relationships with the agencies involved in industrial and mining operations, such as Environmental Protection Agency, Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the State of Wyoming

Experience and qualifications for success:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, natural resource management, geology, environmental engineering, planning, or other related field
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook PowerPoint and using advanced search techniques of major search engines; experience using Zoom, Deltek Vision, and other professional software applications such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, ESRI GIS, AutoCad a plus
  • Demonstrated proficiency with technology based equipment and tools (GPS, smart phone, tablet, laptop, etc)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with effective planning, time management, ability to delegate assignments, maintaining an orderly work environment/project organization (email, folder structure, etc), ability to manage a meeting, adept at following instructions, problem-identification and resolution, goal-setting, ability to meet deadlines, multitasking, detail oriented, ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
  • Comfortable working in remote locations for 10-plus hour days
  • Lifting, walking and carrying field equipment in difficult terrain.
  • MSHA/OSHA training is preferred.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years combined experience in project management, environmental consulting, or related support of mining and other energy projects
  • Extensive working knowledge of mining commodities and experience in supporting the mining lifecycle, including exploration, feasibility, studies and regulatory review, construction, operation and compliance, and reclamation and closure activities
  • Demonstrated experience in providing permitting and planning support for other business lines, such as oil and gas, transmission, transportation, and water
  • Demonstrated experience in GIS map and CAD drawing understanding and reviews
  • Extensive working knowledge of applicable federal laws (e.g., National Environmental Policy Act; Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act; Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act) and state regulations governing resource management related to the development of mining, energy, and infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated experience working with federal agencies, specifically the Bureau of Land Management; U.S. Forest Service; Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement; Bureau of Indian Affairs; and/or Environmental Protection Agency
  • Demonstrated experience working with state agencies, specifically the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Land Quality and Water Quality Divisions, Utah Department of Environmental Quality, Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Montana Department of Environmental Quality, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the New Mexico Environment Department
  • Demonstrated experience working with agencies in multiple states, specifically Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Arizona, and New Mexico
  • Experience with supervising staff and project teams and demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects and programs in diverse settings and with changing requirements
  • Desire to thrive in a highly collaborative team atmosphere
