Bus Mechanic

Responsibilities

● Performing scheduled maintenance tasks, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and replacing filters.

● Conducting detailed inspections to identify mechanical issues.

● Diagnosing and repairing minor to moderate mechanical problems.

● Keeping maintenance records updated and organized.

● Cleaning and maintaining a safe, organized workspace.

● Using diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot issues.

● Completing vehicle safety checks before deployment.

● Reporting major repair needs to supervisors.

Essential Duties

● Changing water pumps, radiators, wheel bearings, brakes, calipers, rotors, alternators, ball joints, AC compressors, and steering boxes.

● Performing engine tune-ups and troubleshooting mechanical issues.

● Replenishing fluids such as engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid.

● Replacing air and oil filters independently.

● Inspecting and replacing tires when necessary.

● Completing brake system inspections and repairs.

● Maintaining proper use and tracking of tools.

● Driving buses to field locations to conduct repairs as needed (mechanics must be able to drive to perform on-street repairs).

● Transporting buses to NYS DOT pre-inspection and official inspection sites when

required.

Exclusions

● Larger jobs, including engine replacements, transmission replacements, spring

replacements, and rear-end work, are outsourced to specialized shops.

Non-Essential Duties

● Assisting drivers with minor vehicle concerns.

● Participating in company safety meetings and training sessions.

● Assisting with maintaining parts inventory and stocking supplies.

● Vacuuming and shampooing carpets and seats, disinfecting high-touch surfaces, and

maintaining vehicle interiors.

● Hand-washing or pressure washing vehicles, excluding waxing and polishing tasks.

● Cleaning windows, mirrors, lights, and undercarriage.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role does not include direct supervision but requires working collaboratively with other team members and assisting junior staff when necessary.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Education and Experience

● High school diploma or equivalent required.

● Previous experience performing mechanical repairs on buses or similar vehicles

preferred.

● Valid Class E chauffeur driver’s license required to be able to drive buses if needed.

Technical and Computer Skills

● Strong understanding of vehicle mechanical systems.

● Ability to use diagnostic and repair tools.

● Basic computer skills for maintenance record-keeping.

Language Skills

● Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

● Proficiency in Spanish preferred.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $28.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 – 27 per week
