Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Digital Content Specialist to join the Strategic Communications Department, which shares and promotes the Lab's scientific, institutional, and operational priorities with key audiences inside and outside Berkeley Lab. This position will work with communications colleagues, Lab leadership, and subject matter experts to conceptualize, develop, and implement online, digital, and multimedia products that inform and engage key stakeholders in the Lab's research programs and capabilities. As a Digital Content Specialist, you will transform written, audio, illustration, image, and video assets into compelling communications products that help grow the Lab's reputation as a world leader in scientific research.

A major responsibility will be to assist with a 2-year web content strategy and web redesign project led by the Strategic Communications Department, serving as a liaison for the project with various internal stakeholders. In this role, you will work with others to help develop and implement a multi-level content strategy deployed on modern, standards-based, customer-friendly, well-organized websites for Berkeley Lab's internal and external audiences. This will require content design, development, production, information architecture, migration, and SEO, and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to provide partnership-leadership for web design and development projects across the Lab.

This is a unique role that combines project management, content management, client relations, and synthesis of assets to successfully deliver digital and online products that effectively represent and organize the Laboratory's projects, programs, and services. Daily responsibilities will require a strong attention to detail, strong technical knowledge, and the ability to work with different and disparate groups with varying levels of skills and abilities to capture and synthesize engaging, strategic content.

What You Will Do:

Work with communicators, content owners, stakeholders, designers, and web developers to conceptualize, develop, and implement online, digital, and multimedia products that inform and engage key stakeholders in the Lab's research programs and capabilities.

Assist with a 2-year web content strategy and redesign project led by the Strategic Communications Department, serving as a liaison for the project with various internal stakeholders and help build and implement a domain-wide content strategy.

Serve as the digital and online expert in the department, helping assess and recommend new approaches and digital platforms that help achieve the Lab's communications goals.

Manage web projects, including initiation, planning, design, execution, monitoring, controlling and closing.

Maintain and update online content in WordPress, Drupal, and other platforms.

Monitor content for consistency, freshness, ease-of-navigation, accuracy, and evolving best practices for user experience and interface.

Review analytics and customer feedback, devising appropriate responses to further inform editorial content decisions, refine design and site navigation where needed, and optimize all web platforms.

Provide leadership in governance and maintenance of Berkeley Lab's ongoing web presence.

Manage and implement effective, innovative information architecture, and look and feel for subdomain web sites.

Assist with department social media and emergency communications responsibilities, as needed, occasionally after hours.

What is Required:

Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a science relevant to Berkeley Lab's research, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

5 years of related experience in digital organizational communications, online communications, or online journalism.

Strong writing skills, with demonstrated ability to synthesize information from subject matter experts and leadership and make decisions about how to present this information strategically.

Sufficient knowledge of web design, web programming, and content management systems, including understanding of technical aspects of web applications, including database-driven functionalities, general web functionality.

Experience with common CMS platforms, including WordPress and Drupal.

Effective organizational, time management and project management skills with the ability to prioritize work assignments, work collaboratively with others, and adjust schedules based on changing requirements.

Desired Qualifications:

Science communications background.

Experience within a national laboratory or other science-based organization.

Active membership in professional and communications societies and forums.

Notes:

This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

This position will be remote initially, but limited to individuals residing in the United States tentatively until 2021 due to COVID-19. Once the Bay Area shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted, work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
