Duties

As a Mathematical Statistician, the selectee will be responsible for the initiation, formulation, and planning of major statistical studies, design of automated data retrieval and analysis procedures, and will make formal and informal presentations on the data, methods, and findings within EPHA to audiences inside and outside of CPSC.

Additionally, this selectee will perform the following activities:

  • Initiate, plan, develop, and direct statistical studies concerning surveillance and investigation of death and injuries attributable to the use of consumer products, often as part of multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Develop comparative analyses of data derived from the Commission’s data bases, selecting or devising statistical methods and techniques to determine the validity of technical data collected.
  • Prepare, implement, and oversee automatic data processing programs for the selection and assignment of NEISS (National Electronic Injury Surveillance System) cases for investigation.
  • Advise, consult, and assist other Division and Directorate staff on statistical methods for their research projects and special studies, and in the planning and implementation of these projects.
  • Determine sample designs to provide unbiased, statistically valid data and to satisfy the objectives and criteria of a continuing national injury investigation and surveillance system.
  • Prepare technical papers, reports, memoranda and oral presentations, formal and informal, concerning data, methods, and findings to audiences within and outside of CPSC.
  • Evaluate current projects and research findings on the basis of independent review and comparative analyses of surveillance and investigative data available in the Commission and through outside agencies, such as the National Center for Health Statistics and the United States Fire Administration, to determine deficiencies and gaps in knowledge on product-related injuries. Recommends new areas of research and formulates specific hypotheses and research problems to be investigated.
  • Respond to data requests (monthly, bi-annual, and ad-hoc) in support of CPSC’s cooperative work with external voluntary standards development organizations; and completes Product Safety Assessments as requested by CPSC’s Office of Compliance.
    The duties listed above are written at the full performance level (GS-13). If selected for a lower-level position, duties would be modified accordingly.
